                            Pad Warmth 1.0
                          by  Nathan Sheldon
=======================================================================
    A patch for the Roland JV-1080, JV-2080, XP-50, XP-60 and XP-80.
=======================================================================

Overview:

Getting somewhat bored with making special effects patches, I decided it was time I made a more tonal patch. I like "pads" because of the characteristic fullness, so I thought I'd give it a try and make my own. This one turned out quite well for the first pad I've ever made. It has a rich, full, "warm" sound to it.

Requirements:

None (other than a JV or XP synth). No expansion boards are required.

Control:

Use this:            to do this:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Modulation increase vibrato (modulate pitch of sound).
System Controller 1 increase tremolo (modulate volume of sound).
   (is set to Aftertouch).

More Specifics:

This patch uses 3 TONEs. TONE 1 is the "backbone" of the patch providing the warmth and strong sense of tonality. This TONE is a simple sine wave (INT-B 046 "Sine"). As with all the TONEs, it is modulated by LFO 1 when Modulation is applied and by LFO 2 when System Controller 1 (Aftertouch in this patch) is applied. I use a sine wave for each of these LFOs because it sounds the most natural. TONE 2 is an organ VOX waveform (INT-B 254 "Org Vox C"). This TONE provieds a breathy sound to the patch. It is filtered with a low-pass filter and some resonance to bring out the middle frequencies of the waveform. The cutoff frequency keyfollow is set to 70 because it jsut sounded better that way. :-) TONE 3 is a soft pad sound (INT-B 220 "Soft Pad B"). It puts a lot of warmth into the patch and adds some nice tonal value as well. As with TONE 2, I put this TONE through a low-pass filter with some resonance and set the cutoff frequency keyfollow to 70. When they're all put together, it makes a fairly nice sound. To make the entire patch feel "warmer," I cranked up the Analog Feel to a little above 30. It still needed something so I increased the Reverb send level all the way to maximum and selected the Hall 1 reverb effect. This gave the patch a much more spacious effect. But I thought it still needed something, so I stuck TONEs 2 and 3 through the EFX processor set to the Chroous-Tremolo insert effect. This helped the patch quite a bit, though it still sounds OK on its own.
